Holiday Inn, Buffet

It's nearly Christmas, and like last year I would like to celebrate it like farangs do. That means a big meal, too much drink and a shiny tree! Last year I was in Bangkok at the Pullman in Asok, and there was plenty of choice and it was excellent value for money, this year I'm in Phuket and the choice is more limited. Only some hotels offer a Christmas buffet, and Holiday Inn Mai Khao is one of them.

Holiday Inn also do nightly buffets, which are cheaper at 995 baht per head, so I head out for a night out and to experience their Friday 'International Buffet'.

I like this hotel, it's really family friendly, it was stunning, all decked out in lights. But the buffet was only OK. It was pricey, once drinks and service charge and sales tax had been added to the 995, and for that money you can go to Cut Restaurant.

But if the price isn't an issue, this is worth adding to your rota of restaurants for a night out.

They have some really nice sunken poolside tablets, but the baby stroller wouldn't fit. So we headed indoors to more practical seats. Oh well.

A good selection of meats, curry, fried dishes, and pasta dishes are available. But the pasta table had a problem, people didn't know you were supposed to order the pasta with sauces as you like, and instead were spooning little pieces off the two example dishes! Cold, old, pasta instead of freshly made to order. The roast chicken had problems too, it was left there with only three slices of chicken left, it should have been restocked sooner.

Buffets should scream plenty!

The dessert table was well stocked and I stuffed myself silly. After that we explored the hotel, and visited the beach bar. They had an inventive Christmas tree made with coconuts.

Too much food, check. A Christmas tree check. Lots of lights check. Plenty of things on the check list, but I think we'll spend Christmas at home this year.

Mai Khao is at the North end of Phuket island.
