Ancient City, Bangkok

Ancient City is a huge park filled with traditional buildings, arts, crafts, history, boats, floating markets, serpents, monuments. It's just outside of Bangkok and easy to reach by Taxi. This really is a wonderful thing to see, and I wish I could find the words to convince you to visit this attraction!

I'm visiting Bangkok, for the New Year and beyond to see the sights and also show you that Bangkok is open for tourists. In the press you hear about all these anti-democracy protests, but when you're in Bangkok the protests are just a nuisance. I visiting the Golden Mount, which is right next to the protest site and didn't notice them.

I've heard about this place, but never had the chance to visit, and I'm so glad I can finally get here. If you've seen mini villages before, this place is like a full sized version of those. Restored old buildings, recreated ones, places to eat, village scenes. Why visit across Thailand when you can see it all in one day in one place!

Getting around is best done using the provided trams, by bike and by the boat trip. Walking isn't an options, it's just too big. I opted for a more fun option, a golf buggie! I always wanted to drive one of these, and it's only 300 baht an hour extra to rent one.

An old style Thai market is the sites version of a gift shop, and I was happy to find Ya-Dong, the Thai herbs you add to whiskey or gin for flavor. I'm taking a pack of these herbs home as a gift back with me, and while I was there, I bought myself a traditional farmers reed hat.

So many sights, I'd spent the whole day here, had a meal at the floating market, shopped, learned how farmers made rice in olden days, and still hadn't seen it all. But the park was closing soon, and I would have to go. This is a must see attraction if you're visiting Bangkok and I'll be back!

To get there, catch the BTS Skytrain to Bearing station, and hop in a taxi. The taxi drivers will know this, my meter taxi fare was less than 150 baht (2014 price).
